Food production residues, co- and by-products valorisation into feed
Abstract
During the production of food, plant and animal co- and by-products and residues (KS) are formed, which could be valorised into animal feed and used in the production of animal food. The research topic focuses on the valorisation of residues, co- and by-products, and whole harvested grain silage in the composition of animal feeds as alternative energy sources and/or as useful bioactive, antibacterial, antioxidant, etc. additives. The production of feed containing so called processed animal protein from animal KS would be a new field for Estonian local feed Industry as the use of animal by-products in pig and poultry feed is permitted in the EU only from 2021. The outcome of the project is a more efficient utilisation of residues, co- and by-products, a reduction in the amount of waste and potential additional income for food producers. The project contributes to the innovation in the feed-producing sector.
