Security and management of Coastal groundwater resourcesand marine ecosystem services

Suuroja, Sten

Abstract

SecuCoast will develop and apply novel geophysical, optical, geochemical and microbiological techniques to produce a significant new understanding of the dynamic interactions between groundwater and seawater in coastal aquifers and the impacts of submarine groundwater discharge on the coastal sea ecosystem. This will address to map, monitor, and assess groundwater and marine ecosystem services in the context of global change. In addition, we will provide critical constraints for human and climate change pressures on ecosystem services through well-constrained numerical modeling. The SecuCoast consortium includes 7 institutes, representing 4 countries around the Baltic Sea, 2 countries from the Mediterranean and 1 country from the Northern Atlantic: Finland Geological Survey of Finland (GTK - coordinating partner), Sweden Stockholm University (SU), Poland Institute of Oceanology, Polish Academy of Science (IOPAN), Sten Suuroja Estonia Geological Survey of Estonia (EGT), Norway Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), Albert Folch Spain Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Itay Reznik Israel Geological Survey of Israel (GSI).
