Speech Genres in Newfoundland
Abstract
Newfoundland has long been recognized as a rich area in the anglophone world for folklore and dialect. Neverthless, despite this significant body of research, whole aspects of Newfoundland vernacular culture have yet to receive extensive documenta:on in book form, especially those 'humbler' verbal genres, less monumental than tales and ballads. By this I mean such things as riddles, charms, nicknames, and the like. Furthermore, far less common than records of the words of riddles, etc., is informa:on about how these texts worked in prac:ce, what their associated etiquette was, what context they belonged in, etc. My research aims to document both such genres and their workings. The resultant work should prove of interest to both local and interna:onal scholars, as well as to the local communities where such genres were (and are) current.
