Unlocking the secrets of carbon cycle in the aquatic ecosystems

Kutser, Tiit

Abstract

Lakes and coastal waters, especially their littoral zones, are hotspots of carbon processing, but are currently neglected by researchers as too complicated to study. Remote sensing could be the tool to perform large scale carbon cycle studies. However, the remote sensing signal measured near the shores is also very complicated to resolve as it consists of many components. The main aim of the project is to establish a comprehensive framework for studying carbon dynamics in coastal and inland waters. By developing and employing cutting-edge remote sensing methodologies, particularly focusing on the often neglected littoral zones, our aim is to bridge the existing knowledge gaps and enhance understanding of carbon pools at both regional and global scales. This is crucial for filling critical gaps in our comprehension of the global carbon cycle and its implications for climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
