Architecture and Design of Modern Learning Environments: Experimental Development of Post-Carbon Kindergartens and Primary Schools
Abstract
The project focuses on creating an experimental solution for kindergartens and primary schools, where buildings and the environment are integrated as teaching tools. PISA tests highlight the need for learning spaces that foster creativity and critical thinking, especially in early education. The project builds on the "Changing School Space" concept by Katrin Koov and uses natural materials and modular design, developed under Dr. Renee Puusepp at the Estonian Academy of Arts. The development includes practical solutions like rainwater harvesting and composting toilets, allowing students to learn principles of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts through hands-on experience. The expected outcome is a flexible, sustainable learning environment for schools across Estonia.
