Coping of the elderly in the fields of optometry, pharmacy, oral hygiene and prosthesis care, and nutrition – a study in Estonian nursing homes
Abstract
This study is an interdisciplinary project integrating three curricula, and its results will be used to develop the involved curricula and courses (Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacotherapy I, II 5+5 ECTS, Counseling in Pharmacies I, II 3+4 ECTS, Oral Hygiene and Diseases 3 ECTS, Acrylic Prostheses I, II 8+8 ECTS, Partial (bügel) Dentures I, II 10+5 ECTS, Visual Perception 4 ECTS, Geriatric Optometry 3 ECTS, Vision Rehabilitation). The aim of the study is to determine and map the current situation in Estonian nursing homes, focusing on residents’ oral hygiene and the condition of their dental prostheses, behavioral changes caused by declining visual acuity and the maintenance of vision-correcting aids, the use of medications and treatment adherence, as well as the factors influencing these. The goal is to highlight opportunities for improving the quality of life of the elderly and to develop supportive guidelines and additional solutions for nursing home staff—through optimizing use, enhancing quality of life, and mitigating potential additional health risks. As a result of the study, comprehensive solutions will be proposed for medication use, assessing visual capacity, and oral care, helping to improve the quality and person-centeredness of the services provided. These outcomes support the objectives of Estonia 2035 and the Public Health Development Plan 2030.
