Professionalisation of teachers and mentors in vocational education to realise powerful learning environments for sustainable transition

Roos, Liana

Abstract

In past years, we witnessed a growing focus of the European policy agenda on the role of VET teachers in ensuring effective vocational education and training, including work-based learning. The role of the mentor from the workplace/ company is crucial in building innovative forms of partnerships with world of work. VET. This is reflected in the Riga-conclusions and the ET2020 working group on VET, stressing the need for professionalisation opportunities for both teachers and mentors. To strengthen the capabilities of both teachers and mentors in (dual) vocational learning, ProTM aims to develop a sustainable professionalisation program for teachers and mentors., both from schools and company’s. More specifically, the project will stimulate the creation of extended teams where teachers and mentors cross boundary’s and work together to create powerful learning environments for the students involved; a master class will be developed to support the teachers and mentors to create the extended teams. ProTM will test the professionalisation program of the extended teams, supported by the master class, in Belgium, Germany, France and Estonia. By continuously evaluating and improving the program during the project, it will result in a generic professionalisation approach that can be tailored to the needs of different contexts. To stimulate the European transferability, the materials will be made available in English and the other languages used in the project.
