Digital twin of marine renewable energy
Abstract
Demand for carbon-free energy is growing and increased attention has been drawn to renewable energy sources hidden in the sea. Due to its favorable location on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, Estonia has a unique opportunity to explore the spatio-temporal distributions of various processes and energy resources of its water masses and their potential utilization. Our main objective is to map the renewable energy resources of Estonian territorial waters and create a consolidated digital twin of marine energy for users based on the gathered data. In collaboration with partners from the public and private sectors, five use cases will be examined to explore the deployment and scaling potential of these marine energy resources. Since the adoption of new renewable energy resources requires significant investments in the near future, it is crucial to assess the changes in these resources over the coming decades. This will be achieved by utilizing climate scenarios from the 21st century.
