Kalmus, Veronika

Abstract

The objective of the EU Kids Online (EUKO2024) project is to investigate and analyze the online activities, associated opportunities and risks, and mental well-being of school-aged children in Estonia (ages 10-17) within the context of significant societal changes and technological developments. This aim is closely aligned with several national development plans, including national documents in the field of mental health and well-being, and the ongoing Children’s Mental Health study. The third wave of the EU Kids Online survey in Estonia is conducted by the University of Tartu (Institute of Social Studies and Institute of Psychology) and a survey company (outsourced service). The planned study consists of two sub-studies. The quantitative survey includes students aged 10–16 from general education schools, with a target sample size of N=2520, selected based on schools. The survey will be administered during school lesson using a self-completed questionnaire on a computer. The smaller-scale qualitative study will involve interviews with 11-17-year-old youths (N=15). The study outcomes will include: 1) a questionnaire on media use and mental well-being considering the latest technological developments, aimed at investigating children’s online activities and changes in the use of digital technology and services; 2) an interview protocol concerning the use of generative AI; 3) an overview and conclusions based on the collected data. The study will provide input for planning prevention and awareness activities and services, as well as interventions related to mental well-being.
