RECYCLEST - Circular Infrastructure with Recycled Construction and Demolition Waste
Abstract
Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) offers a huge source of various materials, but it is rarely used as secondary raw materials for infrastructure projects. Although CDW recovery in Estonia is seemingly high, 84-89%, the majority is used for primitive backfilling which is a low economic yield approach to simply get rid of waste, rather than provide high value-added upgraded products which could have a real environmental and economic benefit for Estonia. The RECYCLEST project will guide possible future scenarios where a significant portion of the CDW can be recycled to create a new added value, which means conservation of resources and decrease in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by replacing part of the virgin materials with secondary raw materials. Besides, the competence of the key partners, i.e., Estonian universities, will assist the public authorities, relevant national associations, private sector of waste management and construction industry to create a symbiotic synergy.
