Addressing inequities in cancer: register-based approach to understand mechanisms and develop solutions
Abstract
With rapid progress towards reducing cancer mortality, inequities in cancer have become more visible. Inequities persist across many dimensions and affect cancer risk, early detection, care, and survivorship. The overall goal of this project is to increase knowledge on inequities in cancer and develop solutions for achieving optimal outcomes throughout the cancer continuum. The goal will be pursued through a series of register-based and intervention studies under three themes: 1) cancer screening and early detection, 2) cancer care and survival, 3) survivorship, living with and beyond cancer. The cross-cutting focus will be on social inequities, vulnerable populations, and on the impact of crises. This interdisciplinary project bringing together expertise in cancer epidemiology, clinical medicine, and social epidemiology will make an important contribution to evidence base regarding inequities in cancer and support the implementation of cancer control policy.
