Hemingway’s war narratives in film adaptations (WARinFILM)
Abstract
The research will highlight the possibilities and limits of screen adaptations of Hemingway’s war narratives presented in his novels and short stories. The application of a cross-disciplinary intersemiotic approach to comparing a written text with its film adaptation will allow to go beyond conventional methods in adaptation studies. The approach developed in the project requires the incorporation of various artistic disciplines, including visual arts, music and cinema, which help to re-imagine Hemingway’s war narratives in different sign systems and media. Moreover, a multicultural reception model of analysis will be applied to evaluate the impact of Hemingway's works and their film adaptations on young people from different Eastern European countries and with a different linguistic and cultural background. This will open the door to cross-cultural appreciation of such universal theme as war and help cross-pollinate ideas on interpreting Hemingway’s war narratives in Europe.
