Promoting machine translation literacy in the higher education

Abstract

With the shift to neural machine translation, a whole range of new free machine translation software has emerged, and machine translation (MT) is increasingly used outside the translation industry. At the same time, deficient MT literacy can lead to the proliferation of inaccurate texts that may contain terminology errors as well as serious translation errors. The aim of the project is to map the perception of MT users (non-translators) in higher education (students, lecturers) regarding the limitations of machine translation. Two surveys and a study on how the users perceive the machine translated texts will be conducted to analyze the problem areas in the use of MT. The results will be used to produce sample training materials and a website. An international doctoral seminar will also be organized. The project will provide a basis for further research and guidelines for the development of machine translation literacy as a part of digital literacy in Estonia.
