Circular Nutrient Recovery for Sustainable Municipalities
Abstract
The primary objective is to establish a sustainable, circular economy model for municipalities by recovering nutrients from polluted surface water bodies and re-utilizing it as fertilizer for municipal parks and other green areas. This process not only addresses the eutrophication problem in surface waters thus reducing loss of aquatic biodiversity but also provides a sustainable solution to landscaping needs. The prototype of phosphorous removal will be tested in 3 lakes, together with the inclusion of satellite (Sentinel 2/MSI) monitoring. Besides two universities (UT and University of Latvia) two municipalities from Latvia (Cesis and Limbazi), one municipality from Estonia (Kastre) and one NGO (Baltic Coasts) are taking part of the project.
